PAULO MENDES DA ROCHA PRITZKER PRIZE Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha has been chosen as the 2006 laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. In announcing the jury's choice, Thomas J. Pritzker, president of The Hyatt Foundation, said, "Mendes da Rocha has shown a deep understanding of space and scale through the great variety of buildings he has designed... 	PALLADIO AWARDS 2006 Despite the prevalence of jagged edges or curvy surfaces in contemporary architecture, there survives a passion among some architects for traditional values and classical ideals. 	AIA CONVENES IN SAN DIEGO The American Institute of Architects 2003 national convention was held in May in the Southern California city of San Diego. 	RENEWED URBANISM The Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) has announced its second annual Charter Awards, honoring 18 projects that represent "best practices" in urban design and planning. Award recipients represent all scales of development from individual buildings to regional plans, mostly within the United States. 	STEEL DESIGN AWARDS 2002 The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) has announced the 2002 recipients of the "Innovative Design and Excellence in Architecture with Steel" (IDEAS) awards. The IDEAS program recognizes buildings in which structural steel forms a prominent architectural feature. Selection criteria include creative use of exposed steel, overall aesthetic effect, design functionality, technical advancement in the use of structural steel, and sensitivity in combining steel with other materials. — Published 2002.0522
	LIVABLE PLACES PROJECT The problem of homelessness in the United States remains intractable. A growing population, rising housing prices, and an uneasy economy all contribute to a scarcity of housing affordable for working class Americans. 	SERT'S MIRO FOUNDATION In 1974, Spanish architect Joseph Lluis Sert completed the Miró Foundation, a museum in Barcelona dedicated to his friend, modern artist Joan Miró. The light-filled galleries were as varied as the artwork they were designed to display. — Published 2002.0206
