	GIS ALL OVER We are blown away by the amount of GIS data that is now available online. GIS, or Geographic Information System, data refers to a mapping database. 	BENTLEY CONFERENCE A software user conference isn't always just about demonstrating new products. It can also be about the underlying vision of the hosting company. That was the case with the Bentley BE User Conference, held in Los Angeles in May 2007. Company spokespeople explained their philosophical approach to their upcoming platform release, code-named "Athens," and bolstered their announcements with examples of progress in building information modeling (BIM), sustainable design, and future research. — Published 2007.0627
	OUR ORGANIC AIRPORT U.S. airports are being continually retrofitted to meet the latest demands of security and growing passenger volumes — gathering climate crisis notwithstanding. One result of ad hoc remodels is an overcrowded, inconvenient, frustrating experience for travelers. To seek solutions to these problems in a new airport design paradigm, the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) and U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) initiated a competition for a million-square-foot (93,000-square-meter), 24-gate facility dubbed 38 N 82 W Regional Airport. The students who won the competition describe their process — working with a variety of digital media — for designing an airport that improves traveler experience while providing a distinctive, legible spatial structure and minimally invasive security. — Editor — Published 2007.0523
	COMPONENTS HOME Bell Travers Willson, a London-based architecture and design studio, has launched a method that harnesses digital design technology and low-volume custom production methods to build a sustainable alternative to traditional housing. Through FACIT, the house-manufacturing company they founded, the architects produce the "Digital House" using a detailed 3D computer model. This information is transferred to a computer numerically controlled (CNC) router, which rapidly cuts components from sheets of plywood in a controlled factory setting. — Published 2007.0425
	SUSTAINABILITY CAD STRATEGIES At the GreenBuild Conference in late 2006, Phil Bernstein, Autodesk vice president of Building Industry Strategy and Relations, announced that the software company would begin working with the U.S. Green Building Council to help architects and engineers more readily adapt their digital design processes to incorporate sustainability issues. — Published 2007.0328
	CONTINUING EDUCATION ONLINE We live in a wonderful age in which architects can be educated in almost any subject you can imagine, via the Internet. Over the course of this last year, I have gone "back to school" online for lessons in such diverse subjects as book publishing, SketchUp photo modeling, calibrating bitmaps in DataCAD, doing ZiPCAD punch lists, and solving a Rubik's Cube. — Published 2007.0221
