    CADFASTER 3D COLLABORATION TOOL

As any architectural designer or design and building manager knows, working on a 3D CAD/BIM model can be extremely complex, with many parties contributing from a variety of platforms to a massively varying degree.

As a unified design, architecture, and structural and services engineering firm, we find this to be particularly true at Arup Associates. — Published 2011.0921

    THINKING ABOUT BIM

Have you ever dreamed about a time when you could call up the site details for a new project — in real time? Without hiring a surveyor? Without visiting the site? Have you ever dreamed about a time when you could open a file and have all the as-built and as-operated details for the remodeling project that you just won? Have you ever wished that you could really understand how your new client's company works, without doing weeks of diagnostics and fact-finding? Well, now you can. — Published 2011.0727

SIMPLE RULES FOR LIGHTING A SCENE

When using the rendering software mental ray within 3ds Max — like almost any other high-end rendering situation — light is one of the most important aspects of a scene. AUTODESK AIMS FOR THE CLOUD

You didn't actually have to be at Mandalay Bay, the site of Autodesk University (AU) 2010, to discover Autodesk's big gamble. Away from the Las Vegas strip, away from the casinos and hotels, Autodesk is setting up shop in the cloud.

Autodesk Labs, a public portal where the company previews many of its R&D initiatives, provides a window into the company's strategy. — Published 2011.0105

    USING ARCHICAD FOR LEED CALCULATIONS

In order to gain the LEED credits required for LEED certification of a building project, calculations must be utilized to determine whether the project meets a credit threshold. These calculations will also need to be recalculated during the design of a project to accommodate modifications and revisions to the design. — Published 2010.1117

    DESIGNING A SMITHSONIAN ROOF

Foster + Partners won an invited international architecture competition in 2004 to design a new courtyard enclosure for the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, housed in the Old Patent Office building in Washington, D.C. Early in the project, the firm's Specialist Modelling Group was brought in to advise the project team on modeling techniques, to develop new digital tools, and help solve the complex geometric issues involved. — Published 2010.1027
