BUILD BOSTON 2010 The venerable Build Boston conference often provides an excellent way to take the temperature of the architecture and construction industry. This year was no different, as the conference, now in its 26th year, took on a leaner, less glitzy feel, with a smaller trade show area and fewer celebratory ballroom events. But it was clear that attendees were serious about preparing for the future: the nearly 200 workshops and seminars were extremely well attended by thousands of industry professionals. — Published 2010.1215
	PORTLAND AIA AWARDS When the University of Oregon made plans with longtime athletics benefactor Phil Knight, chairman of Nike, to build a new study center for student athletes on the Eugene campus, the stated goal was to create a building of striking beauty that celebrates the landscape. The resulting John E. Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes is a gleaming glass cuboid set against a reflecting pool, impressing passersby with its pristine presence while providing abundant outdoor views to the select athletes within. — Published 2010.1110
	TEACHING DESIGN/BUILD: STUDIO 804 Studio 804, which takes its name from the final design studio within the graduate architecture program at the University of Kansas, compresses every aspect of design/ build practice into an intensive five-month experience. In the ten years since the studio began, we've progressed from small-scale projects to creating affordable housing for the city of Lawrence to the point at which students now design, build, and install prefabricated homes for entry-level buyers in Kansas City. — Published 2010.1020
	MANHATTAN TOWNHOUSE Having a strong appreciation for the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Edgar and Clarissa Bronfman commissioned the firm of Peter Rose to design the gut renovation of a Manhattan townhouse in order to create a home with the appropriate atmosphere for their significant art collection. — Published 2010.1013
	HADID - MAXXI - STIRLING PRIZE 2010 In the Flaminio district of Rome, a sinuous concrete building stands on a quiet street. This is the home of MAXXI, the Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo (National Museum of 21st Century Art). Designed by Zaha Hadid, MAXXI has received the Stirling Prize for 2010 from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). — Published 2010.1006
	GREEN SCIENCE IN SALT LAKE CITY The new Meldrum Science Center, certified LEED Platinum, provides an outstanding teaching and laboratory facility for the Westminster College campus in Salt Lake City, Utah. The airy, daylit interior of the four-story, 60,000-square-foot (5,600-square-meter) building provides a fertile matrix for interactive learning about science — in the curriculum and in the building. — Published 2010.0929
	EDUCATIONAL BUILDING At two schools in the Pacific Northwest, daylit classrooms stand in small clusters rather than linear arrays along corridors. Architecture firm Mahlum designed these buildings — Gray Middle School in Tacoma, Washington, and Thurston Elementary School in Springfield, Oregon — to foster small "learning communities" within each school. — Published 2010.0922
	URBANISMS / TURKEY In Akbuk, Turkey, overlooking the Aegean Sea, a new eco-reserve of small town fragments, like islands in a preserved landscape of cultivated natural vegetation, will be characterized by advanced technologies in sustainability, while also anchored in the poetic reverie of this ancient site. 	LISTENING Architecture firms commonly advertise on their websites that they "listen." Similarly, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) recommends that after clients have interviewed potential architects and have chosen a leading candidate that, among other items, the clients consider whether "the architect really listened to what you were saying." The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) states that at the initial meeting, after an architect has been chosen, "your architect will listen carefully to your intentions..." The word listen is used frequently enough to suggest its importance but it is also used loosely. — Published 2010.0623
	U.S. HISTORIC SITES IN PERIL An art deco highrise in eastern Mississippi continues to deteriorate, as does one of the last remaining Negro League baseball stadiums, in New Jersey.
