SHUBIN + DONALDSON - FROM FUEL TO BISCUIT
The apparent placelessness of Los Angeles, where one community bleeds into another with little visible distinction, can partially be attributed to its major industries — advertising, television, movies, the web — because these businesses live placelessly, mostly in periodicals, or on screens in the theater, in the family room, and at the desk. AIA EDUCATION DESIGN AWARDS
When Canada's Royal Conservatory of Music set about expanding its midtown Toronto campus, a careful balancing act was required. The project combined construction of the new Telus Centre for Performance and Learning with the progressive restoration of historic McMaster Hall. The conservatory also sought to energize a new cultural district for the city in conjunction with major cultural facilities nearby, such as the Royal Ontario Museum and Gardiner Museum. STANLEY TIGERMAN: ARCHITECT AS CHAMELEON
A bedrock belief in the classic theology of modern architecture was that architects always had to be original. Architects were to create a new built world that divested itself from the past, from classical architecture and its decoration, and invent brand-new, innovative buildings. In many ways, for a modern architectural designer, being original could be more important than being good. Published 2011.1005

TUNING A BUILDING AT KIERANTIMBERLAKE
At KieranTimberlake, we frequently conduct postoccupancy building monitoring to verify the performance of our buildings. Preproject monitoring services are used to diagnose and treat existing buildings.
A monitoring program preceded renovation work at Yale University's Sage Bowers Hall, a 1920s-era classroom and office building. The study compared existing uninsulated construction with mock-ups that added new insulation and energy-efficient window assemblies. Published 2011.0928

NOTES FROM MANHATTAN: HIGH LINE TO WTC
New York on the cusp of fall: the light has that very yellowy tint that only happens this time of year, and the air seems clear as crystal. STUDY IN ENGINEERING
Architecture as a teaching tool is a very old idea. Think about those cathedrals whose stained glass and sculpture indoctrinated their congregations on the lessons of Christianity. And when Thomas Jefferson was planning the University of Virginia, it is said that he intended the architecture to function partially as text; he had designed the pavilions along the great lawn in different architectural styles to instruct students on Western architecture's greatest achievements.
