By 2008, however, the neighborhood's modest, century-old houses had fallen into disrepair. 	HEALTHCARE AIA AWARDS The Duke (University) Integrative Medicine center combines conventional treatments with alternative therapies such as acupuncture, acupressure, yoga, and meditation. 	USING ARCHICAD FOR LEED CALCULATIONS In order to gain the LEED credits required for LEED certification of a building project, calculations must be utilized to determine whether the project meets a credit threshold. 	AUSTRALIA ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 2010 In an inner-city suburb of Sydney, Australia, a compact new public building combines the functions of library, neighborhood center, and daycare facility with striking style, while including a wide range of green features, from mixed-mode ventilation to an automated system of wood louvers that track the movement of the sun. — Published 2010.1117
	EFFECTIVE SPECIFICATIONS FOR CONSTRUCTION WASTE RECYCLING The specifications prepared as part of the construction documents provide the architect with the opportunity to define the overall scope and nature of the recycling effort on the site. In preparing the specifications she will attempt, as she does in other technical specification sections, to stake out the overall goals and requirements of the program without telling the contractor exactly how to manage the program. — Published 2010.1110
	PORTLAND AIA AWARDS When the University of Oregon made plans with longtime athletics benefactor Phil Knight, chairman of Nike, to build a new study center for student athletes on the Eugene campus, the stated goal was to create a building of striking beauty that celebrates the landscape. The resulting John E. Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes is a gleaming glass cuboid set against a reflecting pool, impressing passersby with its pristine presence while providing abundant outdoor views to the select athletes within. — Published 2010.1110
	DESIGNING A SMITHSONIAN ROOF Foster + Partners won an invited international architecture competition in 2004 to design a new courtyard enclosure for the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, housed in the Old Patent Office building in Washington, D.C. Early in the project, the firm's Specialist Modelling Group was brought in to advise the project team on modeling techniques, to develop new digital tools, and help solve the complex geometric issues involved. — Published 2010.1027
	CREATING THE WASHINGTON METRO The Washington, D.C., Metro project established Harry Weese & Associates as the country's foremost architectural designer of rail transit systems, and led to the firm's involvement in the planning and conceptual design of systems in cities in North America and overseas, including Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas, Buffalo, Toronto, and Singapore. Jack Hartray characterized the Metro as the "greatest architectural opportunity" of the 20th century, and Stanley Allan called it the "crown jewel" in the history of the Weese firm's commissions. — Published 2010.1027
	POSTCARD FROM LOS ANGELES Dear ArchitectureWeek, I recently ventured to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) to see the new Resnick Pavilion designed by Renzo Piano. As I approached the pavilion from Wilshire Boulevard, I was impressed by how impeccably it seems to mimic the adjacent Broad Contemporary Art Museum (BCAM), another recent LACMA building by Piano. Both structures are clad in travertine slabs, both sport fanlike roofs to allow daylight into the galleries, both are accented with bright red exterior elements — staircases on BCAM and sculptural HVAC equipment on the Resnick Pavilion — and yet the two buildings manifest entirely different takes on museum typology. — Published 2010.1020
