RENOVATING FAY JONES
While the work of a master painter or sculptor might be nurtured in climate-controlled galleries for centuries, the works of master architects are often lived in, worked in, enjoyed by crowds, exposed to the weather, and vulnerable to owners' whims. Architecture lovers can hope that their favorite structures are cared for by conscientious stewards, but aside from the use of preservation easements, there are few real guarantees. AIA NATIONAL DESIGN AWARDS
Viewed at a distance from the southwest, 8 House looks almost like a strange landform: two vegetated roofs form a massive green "V" reaching from the ground-floor roof all the way to the top of the building, nine stories above.
The logic of this mixed-use building is better understood from a bird's-eye view. In concept, the plan is a 230-meter- (750-foot-) long loop that has been twisted to form a giant, angular figure eight. Published 2012.0215

POSTCARD FROM LISLE, ILLINOIS

The answer may be found at the new Children's Garden at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois. Landscape architects from the Hitchcock Design Group collaborated with engineers and educators in designing a park that teaches kids about nature in a four-acre (1.6-hectare), interactive learning environment. PRESERVING WRIGHT'S WESTCOTT HOUSE
In 1907, a house began to take shape on High Street in Springfield, Ohio. Local residents referred to it as a monstrosity. Some thought it to be such a bizarre design for a residential neighborhood, it was mistaken for a sanitarium or hospital. Published 2001.0502
