	IKEA THREATENS BREUER ICON On November 7, 2002, the Board of Aldermen of the City of New Haven, Connecticut voted to approve a development proposal from IKEA, an international retailer of designer furnishings. IKEA proposes to build a major new store on an industrial landfill site known as Long Wharf, bringing much-needed jobs and tax revenue to the city. However, unless IKEA changes its current plans, construction of the facility's parking lot will result in the demolition of a substantial part of the Pirelli Building, designed by Marcel Breuer in 1969 for the Armstrong Tire Company. — Published 2002.1113
	A LOBBY RESTORED For more than 50 years, the lobby of a historic New York office tower had concealed a secret. Hidden above a "modern" drop ceiling with harsh fluorescent lighting was an ornate, inlaid plaster ceiling. In September 2002, the ceiling's year-long restoration was completed. It was part of the midtown Manhattan building's complete renovation, commissioned by leasing and managing agent Joseph P. Day Realty Corporation. 	PIANO'S HERMÈS TOKYO There is a new landmark in Ginza, one of the leading shopping and business districts of Tokyo. 	NEW HOME FOR OLD PHOTOS Last year, the American Academy in Rome moved its valuable photographic archive to a newly renovated villa built in the early 1920s. The challenge for Studio Abbate & Vigevano, the architects designing the villa's renovation, was to create a delightful, daylit interior while protecting the delicate negatives from heat and humidity.
