	AIA HONOR AWARDS 2004 When the furniture company Cisco Brothers decided to build a new showroom in Los Angeles, they realized their impact could extend beyond a single building. They had ambitions to uplift the entire South L.A. neighborhood that is home to numerous furniture manufacturers. Now, phase one of the resulting master plan has received national recognition through an honor award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA). — Published 2004.0211
	FARNSWORTH HOUSE SAVED On the morning of December 18, 2003, historic preservationists were casting a worried eye on the Farnsworth House, designed by 20th-century architect Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe. The famous 1951 steel-and-glass house was to be auctioned at Sotheby's that day, and its fate would depend on whoever emerged as high bidder. — Published 2004.0128
	HIGH MUSEUM REILLUMINATED "Light, whether direct or filtered, admitted through skylights, ribbon glazing, clerestory strips, or minimal perforations in the panel wall, is a consistent preoccupation throughout; apart from its functional aspect, [light] is a symbol of the museum's role as a place of aesthetic illumination and enlightened cultural values. 	BUILD BOSTON 2003 The World Trade Center in Boston was a hotbed of educational activity in mid-November, 2003 as some 15,000 architects, engineers, contractors, owners, and assorted construction professionals attended the 19th annual Build Boston conference. — Published 2003.1217
	AIA GOLD MEDAL FOR SAMUEL MOCKBEE The late Samuel Mockbee, FAIA, has just joined Thomas Jefferson in an elite club of architects who have received AIA Gold Medals posthumously. The widely admired Mockbee was a practitioner and educator until his death in 2001. The American Institute of Architects announced on December 4, 2003 that they would confer on him their highest honor. — Published 2003.1210
	GOOD DESIGN, GOOD BUSINESS The 19-story Price Tower by Frank Lloyd Wright has recently been restored to productive use. A childbirth clinic in Japan is leading an effort to change public attitudes toward women's health. And a new building for the venerable Natural History Museum in London provides much needed climate-controlled labs for delicate specimens. — Published 2003.1119
	SOUTH ATLANTIC AIA DESIGN AWARDS The South Atlantic Region (SAR) of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced in September 2003 the winners of its annual design awards program. Despite the record 231 entries received, four of the five architecture awards went to a single firm, Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects of Atlanta, Georgia. — Published 2003.1112
	ARCHITECTURAL PERFORMANCES? A recent symposium entitled "Performative Architecture: Instrumentality Plus?" at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia was, understandably, focused on defining "performative." An international collection of architects, engineers, designers, and academics grappled with the question, each (seemingly like the blind men of ancient lore) sizing up the "elephant" by grasping a different part. — Published 2003.1105
	BEST OF THE NORTHWEST One of the most diverse regional chapters of the American Institute of Architects has recently announced its annual — and diverse — design awards. In traditions of the Northwest Style and of the Far East, these projects represent a respect for craft and sensitivity to their environment. Nine projects received Awards of Honor.
