PREFAB PLATINUM
On a cloudy day in April 2006, a crowd of curious onlookers gathered on a hillside street in Santa Monica, California, to watch the installation of the first LivingHomes prefabricated house. Over the course of eight hours, 11 modules were hoisted by crane onto a concrete slab in a dramatic departure from traditional residential construction. Published 2006.1206

OREGON ENGINEERING
Engineering students today face a different future from that of their predecessors. As design professionals develop new approaches to sustainability in architecture, old ideas about technology and mechanical controls as the ultimate solution are flying out the window. Published 2006.1115

LEED GOLD ELDER LIVING
As "green" principles begin to take hold in U.S. firms, those architects who have been following them the longest are demonstrating a refined and diverse understanding of what "sustainability" means to a building's occupants. For the NBBJ design team for the Washington State Veterans' Home, sustaining the elderly inhabitants' quality of life was a key component of the design intent. Published 2006.0809

CHILL DATA
When we think of "data center," what comes to mind most readily may be a low, nondescript warehouse in a flat, featureless industrial park. But think again. RTKL Associates, in designing the Highmark Data Center in West Hanover Township, Pennsylvania, built the structure into a hillside, to great functional advantage, and achieved a LEED silver rating in the bargain. URBAN ARTS
The new home for Artists for Humanity in Boston is a creative combination of hard-working architecture, sustainable design and construction, and a reflection of the youth who work and learn in the building. The facility, known as the "EpiCenter," designed by Arrowstreet Architects of Somerville, Massachusetts, is on an infill site in South Boston. Published 2005.1207

MIXED USE BREWERY BLOCKS
From 1856 to 1999, the Blitz-Weinhard brewery anchored the southern end of Portland Oregon's Pearl District, an industrial enclave reborn as a chic urban neighborhood of galleries, condominiums, and restaurants. The five city blocks occupied in the past by the brewery are now being redeveloped as a high-density, mass-transit-oriented mix of office, retail, and residential architecture, all boasting sustainable design. BOSTON DOES BUILDING 2004
No matter how good architectural education is, it seems that architects always have more to learn. Whether it's about designing extra safety features in post-9/11 structures, meeting the certification requirements of new environmental standards, or fixing mold problems in air-tight buildings, practitioners are continually challenged to upgrade their skills. LEED PLATINUM AT UCSB
It is fitting that one of the first buildings to be certified by the U.S. Green Building Council for achieving the "platinum" LEED status is a school dedicated to researching environmental issues, training research scientists and professionals, and identifying and solving environmental problems. SUSTAINABILITY NORTHEAST
"Green" Building design, as it becomes increasingly adopted by U.S. architects, is about more than conserving energy and natural resources. In green building, design criteria broaden to include fostering a sense of community, maintaining healthy environments, and preserving historic properties. These were some of the themes of the 2003 awards program of the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA), which recently made awards to workplaces, schools, and residential projects.
