    AIA HEALTHCARE AWARDS

When Providence Health & Services hired Mahlum to design a new clinic on the north side of Portland, Oregon, the architects saw a familiar formula, and looked beyond it.

"All the rest of their clinics have red brick," recalls Anne Schopf, a principal at Mahlum. "We really wanted to create a new face for them, a new attitude." — Published 2009.0909

    ENDANGERED HISTORIC U.S. PLACES 2009

Unity Temple, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for his own Unitarian congregation in Oak Park, Illinois, remains an icon of early modern architecture, with its geometric design, strong massing, characteristic detailing, and use of exposed concrete. — Published 2009.0513

    PICTOU LANDING HEALTH CENTER

The new medical clinic and community center in the Pictou Landing First Nation in Nova Scotia recalls a longhouse, the traditional winter lodge of the Mi'kmaq.

Sustainably harvested spruce poles, six to eight inches (15 to 20 centimeters) in diameter, are bent and lashed together at the tops. Like a giant wooden model of a whale's ribcage, clad with rows of oversized spruce shingles, the peaked frame is an adaptation of traditional Native bent-wood construction. — Published 2009.0114

    CATHEDRAL OF LIGHT

The soaring Cathedral of Christ the Light designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill has transformed an old retail and commercial district in Oakland, California, into a vital sacred and civic gathering place.

The all-new 224,000-square-foot (20,800-square-meter) complex for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland brims with amenities, including a public plaza and garden, health clinic, conference center, gift shop, and cafe, as well as clergy living quarters. — Published 2008.1105

    BRICK AWARDS 2008

The Durham County Regional Public Library in Durham, North Carolina, takes advantage of brick for environmental benefit.

Brick's thermal mass improves the energy efficiency of the LEED Silver-certified facility, helping to keep energy use 35 percent lower than that of comparable conventionally designed buildings. The brick was procured locally, and made from raw materials extracted regionally. — Published 2008.1001

    AIA HEALTHCARE AWARDS 2008

At the CHA Women & Children's Hospital near Seoul, a softness of natural light, organic elements, and curving form tempers a sleek building of glass, aluminum, and stainless steel. KMD Architects designed the facility, with associate architect yo2 Architects, to provide uncluttered respite from the surrounding neighborhood's visual noise. — Published 2008.0917

    GETTING GREEN PRODUCTS RIGHT

Green project requirements can be found just about anywhere in the contract documents. This is also true for green building product requirements that are an important part of any green building project.

Just like green project requirements, green building product requirements can be included in the contract documents either explicitly or implicitly. — Published 2008.0618

    HISTORIC U.S. PLACES AT RISK

The iconic Michigan Avenue Streetwall in Chicago, Illinois, features the work of many of the city's best architects, and boasts an array of styles and building technologies dating from 1880 to 1930. Buildings by Louis Sullivan and Daniel Burnham are among the structures that compose this 12-block stretch of historic buildings that face Lake Michigan across parkland. — Published 2008.0611

    SUPER SEISMIC MEDICAL CENTER

The Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, currently under construction in Burlingame, California, will be the first "base-isolated" hospital in northern California.

Built on isolator bearings with seismic dampers, the building was designed by Anshen + Allen to remain operational after a major seismic event. During an earthquake, the building can move up to 30 inches (76 centimeters) horizontally and two inches (five centimeters) vertically without incurring major damage. — Published 2008.0514
