	AMERICAN LANDSCAPE AWARDS When it originally opened in 1978, the Portland Transit Mall created a transit-focused corridor in downtown Portland, Oregon. For a distance of 11 blocks through the commercial core, a pair of one-way streets combined dedicated bus lanes and limited car traffic with wide brick sidewalks and an abundance of trees, benches, and shelters. But despite being an icon for progressive urban planning, the mall suffered deferred maintenance and deterioration over time. — Published 2011.1102
	LEED-EB O&M AT THE ROSE GARDEN ARENA In the last few years, fans of the Portland Trail Blazers may have noticed some changes to the Rose Garden arena, the basketball team's home court in Portland, Oregon. The white roof may look a bit brighter, after cleaning to improve solar reflectivity. Inside, conventional trash cans have been replaced by 300 receptacles for enhanced recycling and compost disposal. 	LEED FOR EXISTING BUILDINGS The Empire State Building made headlines recently for achieving LEED Gold certification following a major green retrofit project that will reduce the skyscraper's energy consumption by more than 38 percent. The building's electric chiller plant was rebuilt, electric meters were installed at the tenant level, and all 6,514 window units were removed, refurbished to improve their energy efficiency, and reinstalled. — Published 2011.1012

	STANLEY TIGERMAN: ARCHITECT AS CHAMELEON A bedrock belief in the classic theology of modern architecture was that architects always had to be original. Architects were to create a new built world that divested itself from the past, from classical architecture and its decoration, and invent brand-new, innovative buildings. 	TUNING A BUILDING AT KIERANTIMBERLAKE At KieranTimberlake, we frequently conduct postoccupancy building monitoring to verify the performance of our buildings. Preproject monitoring services are used to diagnose and treat existing buildings. A monitoring program preceded renovation work at Yale University's Sage Bowers Hall, a 1920s-era classroom and office building. The study compared existing uninsulated construction with mock-ups that added new insulation and energy-efficient window assemblies. — Published 2011.0928
