HOUSE OF CARD A new after-school club opened in late 2001 on the east coast of England, in Westcliff on Sea, near Southend, Essex — built almost entirely of cardboard. More than a year after its completion, the award-winning school is still standing and not at all limp. 	GREEN BUILDERS CONVENE With sustainable design commanding an ever-greater presence in mainstream architecture, timing could not have been better for the inaugural Green Building International Conference and Expo of the U.S. Green Building Council. Held in Austin, Texas in November, 2002, the conference brought together over 2,000 architects, builders, scientists, ecologists, and other sustainability-minded professionals. 	URBANE WATERFRONT Two expansive dockland peninsulas on Amsterdam's eastern waterfront have been transformed into landmark residential neighborhoods. Without compromising the traditions and character of the Dutch city, the striking Borneo Sporenburg housing project emphasizes the importance of open space within a high-density environment. The project, its master planner Adriaan Geuze, and his firm, West 8 Urban Design & Landscape Architecture of Rotterdam, have been awarded the seventh Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design by Harvard Design School, where the project is on exhibit. — Published 2002.1120
	THEATRICAL CONSCIOUSNESS The newly opened Mondavi Center, for music, dance, and theater, is part of a master plan for the University of California at Davis aimed at creating a new image for the campus. 	GENTLE ON THE BEACH The Sustainable Bathhouse Project at the Assateague Island National Seashore in Virginia officially opened in June 2002. This project, on a protective but ever-changing "barrier island," is one of several planning, design, and construction projects currently underway there by the National Park Service. Their objectives are to develop cost-effective, environmentally responsible roadways, parking lots, bathhouses, and visitor contact facilities on the southern end of the island, which serves one million visitors annually. — Published 2002.1023

	SHADE CONDITIONING The sun is one of the most abundant resources in the tropics, and diverse technologies already harness its energy successfully. However, as a design determinant, it is not sun but shade that is a fundamental element of architecture in tropical latitudes. Here, shade summons and generally conditions behavior. 	ECOLOGY PARK AT TURTLE BAY For decades, the natural landscape of Northern California has been devastated by damming, mining, and other resource extraction. Water has been routinely redirected from rural areas to urban centers.
