CRYSTAL BRIDGES MUSEUM - SAFDIE IN ARKANSAS
For those familiar with the remote and quiet beauty of the Ozarks of Northwest Arkansas, the sudden appearance of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville seems somewhat miraculous. Published 2012.0201

AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 2011
On a tiny site measuring only seven by six meters (23 by 20 feet), a compact new home rises four and a half stories amidst the urban fabric of Surry Hills, an inner-city suburb of Sydney, Australia.
Designing for himself and his partner, Sue Bassett, architect Domenic Alvaro achieved an unexpected sense of expansiveness within this small space through the use of large precast concrete panels and plate-glass windows, with minimal additional interior detailing. Published 2012.0125

ANATOMY OF METABOLISM
The exhibit "Metabolism, the City of the Future" at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo is a major retrospective looking at Japan's most widely known and perhaps least understood modern architecture movement.
Subtitled "Dreams and Visions of Reconstruction in Postwar and Present-Day Japan," the exhibit throws up images depicting a sci-fi world of floating cities, metropolises in the sky, and soaring geometric shapes and patterns repeated over and over with little apparent correspondence to the psychological needs of humans. THE STORY OF SAARINEN'S JOHN DEERE HEADQUARTERS
Carefully tucking away "the car's fat shine" was integral to the definitive Deere & Company Administrative Center in Moline, Illinois, later renamed Deere & Company World Headquarters.
The exemplar for all subsequent corporate estates, it brought together landscape, site plan, and architecture into an elegant and commanding solution. Deere definitively proved the corporate value of the high-image, high-style suburban headquarters. Published 2011.1207

AIA'S BEST NEW BUILDINGS FROM CHICAGO
A glass dome rises from a lawn on the University of Chicago campus. The ellipsoidal structure by Murphy/Jahn — a counterpoint in form and materials to the eclectic buildings around it — is a refined tip of the iceberg for the Joe and Rika Mansueto Library. Published 2011.1207

SHUBIN + DONALDSON - FROM FUEL TO BISCUIT
The apparent placelessness of Los Angeles, where one community bleeds into another with little visible distinction, can partially be attributed to its major industries — advertising, television, movies, the web — because these businesses live placelessly, mostly in periodicals, or on screens in the theater, in the family room, and at the desk. MOSHE SAFDIE BUILDS FOR PEACE
From the intersection of 23rd Street and Constitution Avenue in Washington, D.C., at a corner of the U.S. National Mall near the Potomac River, the grandeur of the Lincoln Memorial is due south, and war-related memorials to Vietnam veterans, World War II, and George Washington, among others, unfold to the left, southeastward. NEW WOOD WORK
Within these plantations of God, a decorum and sanctity reign, a perennial festival is dressed, and the guest sees not how he should tire of them in a thousand years. In the woods, we return to reason and faith. There I feel that nothing can befall me in life,— no disgrace, no calamity, (leaving me my eyes,) which nature cannot repair. Standing on the bare ground,— my head bathed by the blithe air, and uplifted into infinite space,— all mean egotism vanishes. I become a transparent eye-ball; I am nothing; I see all; the currents of the Universal Being circulate through me; I am part or particle of God. Published 2011.1102

LEED-EB O&M AT THE ROSE GARDEN ARENA
In the last few years, fans of the Portland Trail Blazers may have noticed some changes to the Rose Garden arena, the basketball team's home court in Portland, Oregon. The white roof may look a bit brighter, after cleaning to improve solar reflectivity.
Inside, conventional trash cans have been replaced by 300 receptacles for enhanced recycling and compost disposal. Outside, bicycle racks have proliferated, now accommodating 100 additional bikes. Published 2011.1026

LEED FOR EXISTING BUILDINGS
The Empire State Building made headlines recently for achieving LEED Gold certification following a major green retrofit project that will reduce the skyscraper's energy consumption by more than 38 percent. The building's electric chiller plant was rebuilt, electric meters were installed at the tenant level, and all 6,514 window units were removed, refurbished to improve their energy efficiency, and reinstalled.
