URBANE WATERFRONT
Two expansive dockland peninsulas on Amsterdam's eastern waterfront have been transformed into landmark residential neighborhoods. Without compromising the traditions and character of the Dutch city, the striking Borneo Sporenburg housing project emphasizes the importance of open space within a high-density environment. The project, its master planner Adriaan Geuze, and his firm, West 8 Urban Design & Landscape Architecture of Rotterdam, have been awarded the seventh Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design by Harvard Design School, where the project is on exhibit. GEORGIA AIA AWARDS
The Georgia Association of the American Institute of Architects presented its annual design awards in October 2002, selecting seven projects for special recognition. SOLUTIA GLASS AWARDS
The trend toward greater transparency in modern architecture is due in large part to recent developments in glazing technologies. Laminated safety glass frees architects from strict reliance on opaque structural materials. One of the manufacturers developing such applications is Solutia, which has announced the winners of its 2002 design awards program. GEORGIA PRESERVATION AWARDS
In May, 2002, the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation selected 20 buildings to be honored for excellence in restoration and rehabilitation. One of the award-winning restoration projects was the childhood home of early 20th-century President Woodrow Wilson. The accurate restoration project gave the historic Augusta house the features and character it had during the Civil War and Reconstruction era. Published 2002.0724
