    AIA EDUCATION AWARDS

On a former farm outside Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Indian Community School aims to connect Native American students with their cultural heritage through both curriculum and setting. Antoine Predock Architect PC designed a building to both foster and exemplify that cultural and environmental awareness. — Published 2009.0923

    CHURCH OF BOOKS

Though surely not as great a source of significant contemporary architecture as cultural institutions, places of worship — in one form or another — continue to generate invention and cutting-edge design. The reuse of places of religion for other purposes sometimes poses the problem of deconsecration, with the reticence some users may have when asked to dine or party in a former church. — Published 2009.0916

    AIA HEALTHCARE AWARDS

When Providence Health & Services hired Mahlum to design a new clinic on the north side of Portland, Oregon, the architects saw a familiar formula, and looked beyond it.

"All the rest of their clinics have red brick," recalls Anne Schopf, a principal at Mahlum. "We really wanted to create a new face for them, a new attitude." — Published 2009.0909

    WHO IS PETER ZUMTHOR?

In April, about two weeks before his 66th birthday, Swiss architect Peter Zumthor was named the 2009 laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. Zumthor is not a household name, as many other Pritzker winners have been — architects such as Gehry, Meier, and Pei. Even many architects haven't heard of him. — Published 2009.0826

    AIA SMALL PROJECT AWARDS

When Nanette and Jerry Stump bought a wooded property in Evansville, Indiana, to build an accessible retirement home, they turned to a young architect fresh out of school: their son. — Published 2009.0812

    MICHIGAN AIA AWARDS 2009

For its new northeastern branch, the Ann Arbor District Library asked inFORM studio to design a sustainable building that would promote observation of and respect for its natural surroundings. The resulting Traverwood Branch Library traces a narrow L shape on the corner of a triangular lot, treading lightly on its wooded site while also engaging the street edge. — Published 2009.0715

    AIA HOUSING AWARDS 2009

To the street, the concrete-block home near Bellevue, Idaho, presents minimally incised walls. From inside, the boxy masonry of Outpost opens up to surprisingly expansive views of the rural Idaho landscape. — Published 2009.0610

    AMERICAN LANDSCAPE AWARDS 2009

Buffalo Bayou flows through downtown Houston, Texas, under a tangle of freeways and bridges on its way to Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Landscape architects SWA Group reenvisioned a neglected 1.2-mile- (1.9-kilometer-) length of bayou front, transforming it into pedestrian-friendly parkland with improved floodwater conveyance. — Published 2009.0617

    AIA/ALA LIBRARY AWARDS

In León, Mexico, a white stone-and-glass-clad structure expresses monumental solidity while maintaining indoor-outdoor connectivity. A three-story pergola of white-painted steel covers a plaza and rooftop terrace, adding a rhythmic lightness to the composition. This is the new library designed by Pei Partnership Architects for the state of Guanajuato. — Published 2009.0408

The Danforth University Center provides a new gothic-style gathering space and "front door" for Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Designed by Tsoi/ Kobus & Associates, Inc., the center received one of eleven Palladio Awards for 2009. — Published 2009.0311
