    AIA HOUSING AWARDS 2009

To the street, the concrete-block home near Bellevue, Idaho, presents minimally incised walls. From inside, the boxy masonry of Outpost opens up to surprisingly expansive views of the rural Idaho landscape. — Published 2009.0610

AIA/COTE TOP TEN GREEN PROJECTS FOR 2009

In September 2005, as construction was starting at the Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center in Orange, Texas, the property was severely damaged by Hurricane Rita. The building team led by Lake/Flato Architects salvaged storm-felled trees and incorporated the wood into the project. — Published 2009.0429

    AIA HONOR AWARDS 2009

In creating the Horno3: Museo Del Acero in Monterrey, Mexico, Grimshaw Architects converted an abandoned 1960s steel blast furnace facility into a museum of industrial history. The architects balanced historic preservation with reinvention and expansion to establish a dramatic new landmark. — Published 2009.0211

    DELFT MEDIA LIBRARY

Durability through transformation. That was the architects' vision for the DOK Library Concept Center in Delft, the Netherlands.

The multimedia library occupies part of the overhauled Hoogovenpand, a 1970s mixed-use building facing a public square. Architects Liesbeth van der Pol of Dok architects (no relation) and Aat Vos of Aequo BV revitalized the gloomy building, creating the library space among existing commercial and residential functions. — Published 2009.0128

    AUSSIE ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 2008

The new creative arts building at Brisbane Girls Grammar School in Brisbane, Queensland, combines two contrasting halves into a dynamic whole. Public spaces and circulation are housed in the eastern wing of the Cherrell Hirst Creative Learning Centre, with its columns radiating in a distinctive K shape. The horizontally layered western wing contains flexible teaching spaces for art, music, drama, and technology. The two wings meet at a central atrium intended to foster social interaction and informal learning. — Published 2008.1119

    STIRLING PRIZE FOR ACCORDIA HOUSING

Pairing sensitively designed housing with generous open space, the architects of Accordia created an enduring residential development in Cambridge, United Kingdom, that embodies the inherent sustainability of livable communities.

Their careful efforts have earned Accordia the Stirling Prize for 2008. Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios designed the project with Maccreanor Lavington and Alison Brooks Architects. This is the first residential project to receive the prestigious prize, now in its 13th year. — Published 2008.1015

    HOUSE FOR SWEDEN

The 70,000-square-foot (6,500-square-meter) building for the Swedish Embassy in Washington, D.C., is set on a narrow peninsula at the confluence of Rock Creek and the Potomac River. Surrounded by water on three sides, the peninsula faces south and commands spectacular views up and down the Potomac.

The prominent site called for an emblematic building through which the essence of Swedish culture, technology, design sensibility, and governance would be expressed. — Published 2008.0910

    AIA/HUD SECRETARY AWARDS

Where a failed urban housing project once stood, enclosed and separated from its surrounding neighborhood in San Francisco's Mission District, the mixed-use Valencia Gardens development now supports an integrated neighborhood designed to promote safety through activity.

Architect Van Meter Williams Pollack LLP, with associate architect Martinez Architects, Inc., lined the sidewalk with building entries and reintroduced vehicular streets into the site, connecting it with the urban fabric. — Published 2008.0730
