KEN YEANG'S NATIONAL LIBRARY OF SINGAPORE
The Singapore National Library commission represents Ken Yeang's first large-scale built project outside Malaysia. Won in competition against firms including those led by Moshe Safdie and Michael Graves, as well as the likes of Nikken Sekkei, the library also marks the beginning of a performance-based approach to architecture. MODERN MOSQUE
"It doesn't look like a mosque," said the Muslim woman when I asked for street directions to the Assyafaah Mosque in Singapore. Designed by Singapore-based Forum Architects, the mosque's architecture breaks with tradition. "It's modern," said the woman. Published 2005.0803

ONE RAFFLES LINK
In Singapore, a city of skyscrapers, a new building by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates stands out as the city's first "groundscraper." The design of One Raffles Link nonetheless reflects a Singaporean tradition of efficient urban planning, conserving the city's precious land and allowing it to remain a garden city.
The building spans two cultures, with its ground-level colonnade providing shelter from Singapore's tropical climate and European-style rusticated stonework reminiscent of nearby colonial buildings. Published 2001.0502
