    MAYBECK'S SENGER HOUSE

"Ring in the love of truth and right [...] Ring in the thousand years of peace" —"In Memoriam"

These lines, by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, are inscribed into the Senger House's baronially scaled fireplace and set the mood for this remarkable dwelling. Medieval Teutonic imagery is stenciled throughout the house and carved into overscaled architectural woodwork — a Maybeckian evocation of his client, a professor of German at the nearby University of California. — Published 2013.0327

    WAREHOUSE LOFT CONVERSION

Under the San Francisco South Beach Redevelopment Plan of 1981, the Oriental Warehouse was designated an historic landmark due to its historical value as the early arrival point of Oriental immigrants.

The brick warehouse, originally built in 1868, with a total area of 88,000 square feet (8,200 square meters) on two floors had for many years been used as a warehouse and storage space. — Published 2013.0213

    SAN FRANCISCO ROOFTOP APARTMENT

This apartment, within an old paint factory in San Francisco, was created when the owner decided to add a home to his studio. It was important to separate the work area from the personal, which occupies a new level built atop the original rectangular structure. Tanner Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects designed the addition and renovation project. — Published 2011.0810

    NEW SAN FRANCISCO ARCHITECTURE

SFMOMA commissioned a new sculpture garden for the top of its parking structure, with provisions to connect to the main San Francisco Museum of Modern Art building — a late-20th-century classic that prefigured the wave of museums constructed following the Guggenheim Bilbao in 1997. Jensen & Macy Architects conceived of the garden, which was completed by successor firm Jensen Architects, as a gallery without a ceiling. — Published 2010.0609

    CALIFORNIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

Renzo Piano demonstrates a mastery of light throughout his work. At the new California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, he exhibits the same care lighting a museum of the natural world as he has in lighting some of the world's finest art collections. — Published 2008.1112

    CATHEDRAL OF LIGHT

The soaring Cathedral of Christ the Light designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill has transformed an old retail and commercial district in Oakland, California, into a vital sacred and civic gathering place.

The all-new 224,000-square-foot (20,800-square-meter) complex for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland brims with amenities, including a public plaza and garden, health clinic, conference center, gift shop, and cafe, as well as clergy living quarters. — Published 2008.1105

    SAN FRANCISCO AIA AWARDS 2008

With 40 different awards given by the San Francisco chapter of the AIA, and only a few repeat winners among them, there were plenty of happy architects by the Bay this year.

Pritzker Prize-winner Thom Mayne and his Santa Monica firm, Morphosis, received one of four honor awards for excellence in architecture. Morphosis shared the award for the San Francisco Federal Building with the local office of SmithGroup. — Published 2008.0528

    SACRAMENTAL RESTORATION

The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament has been an impressive landmark of California's capital city of Sacramento ever since its 1889 completion. But by the turn of the 21st century, it had deteriorated and been found incapable of withstanding the next big earthquake. Now, a $34.5 million restoration has rescued this spiritual oasis in a political city. — Published 2006.0329
