    STIRLING PRIZE FOR ACCORDIA HOUSING

Pairing sensitively designed housing with generous open space, the architects of Accordia created an enduring residential development in Cambridge, United Kingdom, that embodies the inherent sustainability of livable communities.

Their careful efforts have earned Accordia the Stirling Prize for 2008. Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios designed the project with Maccreanor Lavington and Alison Brooks Architects. This is the first residential project to receive the prestigious prize, now in its 13th year. — Published 2008.1015

    YOUNG VIC RENEWAL

The redesigned Young Vic Theatre by London architects Haworth Tompkins is more than just the extension and renovation of a local theater in Lambeth, South London. It is a radical, minimally designed new facility that celebrates the history of the place and highlights the ambitions of the local arts community. — Published 2008.0709

    HEATHROW TERMINAL 5 BY ROGERS

One of the largest construction projects in Europe — and one of the most political and controversial building projects in the UK — the new Terminal 5 at London's Heathrow Airport opened in March 2008, nearly 20 years after the Richard Rogers Partnership (now Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners) won the commission. — Published 2008.0604

    REBUILDING BEAUFORT

Just north of London, off the M25 highway, a single large wind turbine reaches into the air and turns steadily above the bucolic English countryside. The turbine serves to generate power, and also as an emblem of the headquarters of the wind energy company Renewable Energy Systems (RES), set among the hedge rows and rolling hills of Hertfordshire. — Published 2008.0116

    THE SALTBOX AND THE CHIMNEY

Probably the most classic and memorable of New England central-chimney houses had a two-story front and a long roofline sloping down to one story in the rear. It went by several names. Saltbox is the most familiar term, reflecting the look of a once-familiar container. — Published 2008.0102

    PENTAGRAM ESSENZIALE

It seems both fitting and fashionable to design a high-end lingerie store with minimalism in mind. Just as less is more in the world of underwear, luxury retail design has long subscribed to a similar philosophy.

For Lorenzo Apicella and John Rushworth at Pentagram, the fabled London-based multidisciplinary design firm, this was the natural starting point for the creation of Essenziale, a signature, unisex lingerie and beachwear boutique in London's gentrified Mayfair district. — Published 2007.1017

SWISS RE TOWER BY FOSTER AND PARTNERS

During construction, London's newest highrise conjured up many emotions from visitors and locals alike: here was a building that would bring a major change to the skyline. It became affectionately known as the "Gherkin," but was it worth it? Was it a white elephant? — Published 2005.0504

    RECOVERING KINGSDALE

The refurbishment of a dilapidated 50-year-old secondary school in a London suburb has set a number of significant benchmarks for school design in the United Kingdom. The project has lifted concepts of roof design to new heights with what may be the first "variable membrane" roof in the world. — Published 2004.1103
