    HISTORIC PRESERVATION IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

The overwhelming cultural and architectural diversity of the African continent is united by the shared experience of wholesale exploitation and colonization by outside forces. Though many world regions grapple with the complications of post-colonialism, this problem is especially acute in sub-Saharan Africa, where this legacy pervades all contemporary experiences, including heritage conservation. — Published 2009.0916

    WEST AFRICAN ADOBE

Too often, when people in the West think of African architecture, they imagine nothing more than a mud hut a primitive vernacular remembered from an old Tarzan movie. Why this ignorance to the richness of West African buildings? Possibly it is because the great dynastic civilizations of the region were already in decline when the European colonizers first exposed these cultures to the West. — Published 2004.0225

    CALATRAVA WAVE IN TENERIFE

It was originally intended to be a simple concert hall, but the multifunction building for the city of Santa Cruz, Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, also promises to be a landmark. The distinctive, overhanging "wave" curving out over the white concrete Auditorio de Tenerife is the latest creation of renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. — Published 2003.0903

    CLINICS TO AFRICA

Although solving the global AIDS crisis may be beyond the scope of architecture, a young nonprofit has demonstrated that architects can apply their skills to help with this intractable humanitarian problem. It is estimated that three-quarters of the world's HIV/AIDS population lives in Sub-Saharan Africa, most without access to health care. One of the obstacles for medical professionals in Africa is lack of adequately equipped facilities within the vast continent. — Published 2003.0115

    LEGENDARY LIBRARY RESURRECTED

There are many legends about the destruction of the great library in Alexandria 2000 years ago, but much less historical fact about the building itself has survived. Three libraries may have coexisted in the ancient city, but scant data remains about their location, layout, holdings, organization, administration, or physical structure. — Published 2001.0919

    HISTORIC HOTELS OF EGYPT

One of the fascinating achievements of British influence in many former colonies of the British Empire is that the past has almost been frozen in time. While the British themselves were quick to shed the garments of the Victorian tradition and embrace the modern age, the former colonies, because of either financial difficulties or a sort of nostalgia, have preserved the era. — Published 2001.0905
