Dear Designers, Builders, and Friends,

ArchWeek Green, from the editors of the leading architecture magazine online, brings you weekly sustainable design and building news from around our planet.

Almost as interesting as the content of this story in the New York Times business section today, about corporate environmental responsibility, is the fact that it's currently the most-emailed business story at the Times:

"Blasting off mountaintops to reach coal in Appalachia or
churning out millions of tons of carbon dioxide to extract oil
from sand in Alberta are among environmentalists' biggest
industrial irritants. But they are also legal and lucrative.

"For a growing number of banks, however, that does not seem to
	matter.

"After years of legal entanglements arising from environmental
messes and increased scrutiny of banks that finance the dirtiest
industries, several large commercial lenders are taking a stand
on industry practices that they regard as risky to their
	reputations and bottom lines.

"In the most recent example, the banking giant Wells Fargo noted
last month what it called 'considerable attention and
controversy' surrounding mountaintop removal mining, and said
that its involvement with companies engaged in it was 'limited
	and declining.'"

Banks Grow Wary of Environmental Risks - New York Times, 2010.0831
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/31/business/energy-environment/31coal.html

And today at Climate Progress, there's a significant write-up on the huge potential of building energy-efficiency retrofits:

"Energy efficiency is THE core climate solution: The biggest
low-carbon resource by far. 'Efficiency Works,' a major new
report by Bracken Hendricks, Bill Campbell, Pen Goodale, finds
that a straightforward set of policies aimed at upgrading just
40% of the residential and commercial building stock in the
	United States would:

	- Create 625,000 sustained full-time jobs over a decade

	- Spark $500 billion in new investments to upgrade 50 million
	  homes and office buildings

	- Generate as much as $64 billion a year in cost savings for
U.S. ratepayers, freeing consumers to spend their money in
	  more productive ways"

Upgrading Just 40% of Buildings would Generate 625,000 Jobs and Cut U.S. Energy Bills up to $64 Billion a Year - Climate Progress, 2010.0831

News flash: The distance between a residential development
location and the metropolitan center is one of the strongest
factors influencing how much residents will drive.

The density of a neighborhood, in and of itself, turns out to be
the weakest of the commonly considered "D" variables, key
dimensions of the built environment that influence how -- and how
	much -- people move around.

This Week's Quiz -
In 1879 Thomas Edison produced a light bulb with a
carbon filament that burned for 40 hours. By 1880 he had
developed a light bulb using a bamboo-derived filament
that would last 1,200 hours. He did not, however, invent
the first electric light, or even the first light bulb.
The first electric light was invented by Humphry Davy,
	an English chemist, in which of the following years;
	1689, 1749, or 1809?
