Dear Designers, Builders, and Friends,
Green Wednesday, by the editors of ArchitectureWeek, brings you weekly
green design and building news from around our planet.
As LEED project managers know so very well, green is in the details...
Scientists at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the
University of Texas, Austin, asked six local manufacturers
to design a green roof, each with the same 10-centimetre
depth of soil substrate, and then compared them to an
ordinary roof. There was a significant difference in the
amount of water retained by the green roofs, ranging from 26
to 88% in one rainstorm, simply due to the types of
substrates and drainage systems used. Even worse, the
difference between the green roofs was often greater than
that between a green and a non-vegetated roof.

this professional design and building magazine online-only,
we save about 48 tons of paper monthly, 50 large trees
every week, or 2500 trees (around a dozen acres of mature
conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a similar
readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by 100% wind energy through our local utility:
