Dear Designers, Builders, and Friends,

Green Wednesday, by the editors of ArchitectureWeek, brings you weekly
green design and building news from around the world.

If building a new town from scratch doesn't necessarily seem to you like
the most obvious way to create sustainable, low-carbon, environmentally
gentle living opportunities, then you may find resonance in some of the
critiques of the UK national initiative to build 10 new eco-towns...

On 350 hectares spread between the pretty villages of
Yapton, Climping and Ford, a consortium of local landowners
and housebuilders Redrow Homes and Wates Developments want
to build 5,000 homes in a supposedly carbon-neutral town.
Cycle lanes and footpaths will wind between allotments and
'eco-gardens' to zero-carbon homes fitted with solar panels
and wind turbines. A vast biomass boiler will produce
communal electricity, topped up by hydro-electric power from
the ebb and flow of the river. It will be a 'healthy,
vibrant and engaged community', the consortium promises.

Rubbish, say many local residents, who have formed a highly
organised campaign group to block the plan. They say the
eco-town will damage local countryside and wildlife and only
create, rather than solve, environmental problems; they
claim it will become just another enclave of car dependence...

**	ArchitectureWeek is a green publication. By publishing
this professional design and building magazine online-only,
we save about 48 tons of paper monthly, 50 large trees
every week, or 2500 trees (around a dozen acres of mature
conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a similar
readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by 100% wind energy through our local utility:
