Dear Designers, Builders, and Friends,
Green Wednesday, by the editors of ArchitectureWeek, brings you
weekly green design and building news from around the world.
The big picture just gets more clear. A direct and vigorous response to
climate change is needed now, to avoid truly catastrophic impacts. All
the work of defining targets and assessing current footprints is important,
and a necessary part of the start-up process.
But also, we need to be done now with just starting up. We need to be
moving decisively, now, into real and steeply increasing reductions in
carbon emissions, in every emissions sector.
The latest science suggests that national and global climate
policy is seriously misdirected. We must aim at achieving
average annual carbon dioxide emissions of less than 5 GtC
this century or risk the catastrophe of reaching atmospheric
concentrations of 1,000 p.p.m. A carbon price set by a
cap-and-trade system is a useful component of a longer-term
climate strategy. Implementing such a system, however, is
secondary to adopting a national and global strategy to stop
building new traditional coal-fired plants while starting to
deploy existing and near-term low-carbon technologies as
fast as is humanly possible.

important part of any green building project.
Just like green project requirements, green building
product requirements can be included in the contract
documents either explicitly or implicitly.

This Week's Quiz -
The three main fibers used in carpets are wool, olefin,
and nylon. Nylon is probably the most commonly used
fiber. Why would you consider or not consider wool or
olefin in its place?
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2008/0618/quiz.html
Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
True or false (for lumber in the United States):
A. Joists are customarily specified in terms of nominal
sizes, but calculations to determine the allowable span
and required modulus of elasticity are based on actual size.
B. A "two-by-four" is typically half an inch less deep
and a "two-by-eight" is typically three-quarters of an
inch less deep than the nominal size (actual depths are
3.5 inches and 7.25 inches, respectively).

ArchitectureWeek
ArchitectureWeek is a green publication. By publishing
this professional design and building magazine online-only,
we save about 48 tons of paper monthly, 50 large trees
every week, or 2500 trees (around a dozen acres of mature
conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a similar
readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by 100% wind energy through our local utility:
