Green Wednesday 2008.0618

Dear Designers, Builders, and Friends,

Green Wednesday, by the editors of ArchitectureWeek, brings you
weekly green design and building news from around the world.

The UK government is planning ten new "eco-towns" to be built by 2020. And the
aspirations, as stated, are high. But with profound questions asked about just
how "eco" any such new-town development is likely to be, controversy appears to
be rising...

But this time there is a difference: the Nimbys are not
marching alone. Linking arms with them are not just the
greenfield regulars of the Campaign to Protect Rural England
(CPRE): we hear also the measured tread of the Royal Town
Planning Institute (RTPI) and the Local Government
Association. They have heard the dream, but they have not
	seen the light.

They see only a suburban nightmare: remote, unsustainable,
car-dependent housing estates on greenfield sites, built
against the opposition of local people and doomed to
become the slums of the future. Even the architect and
Labour peer Richard Rogers has weighed in, saying: "I
think eco-towns are one of the biggest mistakes the
government could make. They are in no way environmentally
sustainable... building in green areas for 5,000 to 10,000
people means it has to be car-based... It will not be a
	walking community."

This Week's Quiz -
True or false (for lumber in the United States):
	A.	Joists are customarily specified in terms of nominal
sizes, but calculations to determine the allowable span
and required modulus of elasticity are based on actual size.
	B.	A "two-by-four" is typically half an inch less deep
and a "two-by-eight" is typically three-quarters of an
inch less deep than the nominal size (actual depths are
3.5 inches and 7.25 inches, respectively).

ArchitectureWeek is a green publication. By publishing
this professional design and building magazine online-only,
we save about 48 tons of paper monthly, 50 large trees
every week, or 2500 trees (around a dozen acres of mature
conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a similar
readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by 100% wind energy through our local utility:
