Green Wednesday 2008.0520

Dear Designers, Builders, and Friends,

Green Wednesday, by the editors of ArchitectureWeek, brings you
weekly green design and building news from around the world.

Sir John Sorrell in the UK says it is time now to step up our responses
to climate change, city by city and building by building:

Some people think that cutting carbon means denying
ourselves the things that make life enjoyable - no shopping,
no fun - but I see it differently.

Tackling climate change isn't about self-denial, it's about
reinvention; reinventing towns and cities, redesigning the
way they work, and changing the way we all manage our lives.

As the government's design champion, the Commission for
Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) reviews
proposals for 350 of the most significant new buildings and
	spaces every year.

Out of all those homes, schools and health centres, we have
only seen a handful with any serious ambition for
sustainability. Things may be changing, but far too slowly,
which is why we are organising a climate change festival
with Birmingham City Council, which is being held in the
	city from 31 May.

ArchitectureWeek is a green publication. By publishing
this professional design and building magazine online-only,
we save about 48 tons of paper monthly, 50 large trees
every week, or 2500 trees a year, compared to reaching a similar
readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by 100% wind energy through our local utility:
