Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,
Green Wednesday, by the editors of ArchitectureWeek, brings you
weekly green design and building news from around the world.
Chicago is seeking to be systematically less impervious...
"Chicago has decided to retrofit its alleys with
environmentally sustainable road-building materials under
its Green Alley initiative, something experts say is
among the most ambitious public street makeover plans in
the country. In a larger sense, the city is rethinking
the way it paves things.
"In a green alley, water is allowed to penetrate the soil
through the pavement itself, which consists of the
relatively new but little-used technology of permeable
concrete or porous asphalt. Then the water, filtered
through stone beds under the permeable surface layer,
recharges the underground water table instead of ending
up as polluted runoff in rivers and streams. ..."

ArchitectureWeek
ArchitectureWeek is a green publication. By publishing
this professional design and building magazine online-only,
we save about 48 tons of paper monthly, 50 large trees
every week, or 2500 trees a year, compared to reaching a similar
readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by 100% wind energy through our local utility:
