Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,
Green Wednesday, by the editors of ArchitectureWeek, brings you
weekly green design and building news from around the world.
The IPCC has now completed their multi-year cycle of four historic
reports on the global scientific consensus:
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) -
the United Nations body that last month won the Nobel
Prize for its efforts to boost understanding of climate
change - has raised the tone of urgency with its latest
report.
Its new synthesis report, which aims to give
policy-makers a concise summary of the findings of all
three of its detailed research summaries released earlier
this year, is notable for containing more pressing
language relative to earlier output.
Featured in the report is a discussion of "dangerous
anthropogenic interference with the climate system" - a
phrase that was absent from previous IPCC publications
because of objections from some political delegates to
the panel's conferences.
"Delayed emission reductions significantly constrain the
opportunities... and increase the risk of more severe
climate change impacts," the report says.

L-House on the Prairie - ArchitectureWeek, 2007.1114
http://www.architectureweek.com/2007/1114/today.html
In the 19th century, the great majority of the houses of
western Minnesota were cheap, plain, awkward, and
unlovely. Harmony and unity emerged from the mundane
clutter, however, in the form of the classic L-house,
which became representative of much of the farming way
of life in the Midwest.
When the prairie families earned enough money to move
out of their cabins and sod houses, they often built
modest rectangular-shaped, one-and-a-half-story houses
with simple gable roofs. These structures became
L-houses when the families earned enough to add on the
kitchen L and porch of a complete L-house.
