Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,
Green Wednesday, by the editors of ArchitectureWeek, brings you
weekly green design and building news from around the world.
The results of two environmental studies were published this week: one
from Australia and the other from North America. Both seek to explain
observable changes in local environmental conditions, and both arrive at
conclusions that implicate human activity.
In Australia:
A fence built to prevent rabbits from entering the
Australian outback has unintentionally allowed scientists to
study the effects of land use on regional climates.
The rabbit-proof fence - or bunny fence - in Western
Australia was completed in 1907 and stretches about 2,000
miles. It acts as a boundary separating native vegetation
from farmland. Within the fence area, scientists have
observed a strange phenomenon: above the native vegetation,
the sky is rich in rain-producing clouds. But the sky on the
farmland side is clear.

And in the upper Great Lakes:
Erosion caused by dredging and other human activities on the
St. Clair River is causing Lakes Huron and Michigan to lose
2.5 billion gallons of water daily, according to a private
Canadian study.
Like a bathtub drain, the artificially deepened river is
funneling vast amounts of water into Lake Erie, where it
flows east to Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River before
eventually being lost to the Atlantic Ocean, says the study
released Tuesday.

This Week's Quiz -
While "broach" can mean a piece of jewelry, it is also
used as a verb and a noun in stone masonry. What is a
broach in masonry terms?

Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
In response to concerns about climate changes, there has
been a movement in several areas of the country to
require higher levels of environmental responsibility in
the design and construction of buildings. In some cases
this effort is led by architects, such as in Oregon,
where architects have helped initiate legislation (not
yet adopted) requiring state-funded buildings over a
certain size and cost to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design) Gold standards. Many of us
think of "green" architecture as being mostly concerned
with energy conservation. LEED addresses energy and four
other major areas of concern. What are the four other
areas that LEED addresses?

ArchitectureWeek is a green publication. By publishing
this professional design and building magazine online-only,
we save about 48 tons of paper monthly, 50 large trees
every week, or 2500 trees a year, compared to reaching a similar
readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by 100% wind energy through our local utility:
