Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,

Green Wednesday, by the editors of ArchitectureWeek, brings you
weekly green design and building news from around the world.

Alarmed at recent indications of climate change here in the
Amazon and in other regions of Brazil, the government of
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has begun showing signs
of new flexibility in the tangled, politically volatile
international negotiations to limit human-caused global
	warming.

The factors behind the re-evaluation range from a drought
here in the Amazon rain forest, the world¹s largest, and the
impact that it could have on agriculture if it recurs, to
new phenomena like a hurricane in the south of Brazil. As a
result, environmental advocates, scientists and some
politicians say, Brazilian policy makers and the public they
serve are increasingly seeing climate change not as a
distant problem, but as one that could affect them too.

Brazil remains suspicious of foreign involvement in its
management of the Amazon, which it views as a domestic
matter. But negotiators and others who monitor international
climate talks say Brazil is now willing to discuss issues
that until recently it considered off the table, including
market-based programs to curb the carbon emissions that
result from massive deforestation in the Amazon, in which
areas the size of New Jersey or larger are razed each year.

This Week's Quiz -
In response to concerns about climate changes, there has
been a movement in several areas of the country to
require higher levels of environmental responsibility in
the design and construction of buildings. In some cases
this effort is led by architects, such as in Oregon,
where architects have helped initiate legislation (not
yet adopted) requiring state-funded buildings over a
certain size and cost to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design) Gold standards. Many of us
think of "green" architecture as being mostly concerned
with energy conservation. LEED addresses energy and four
other major areas of concern. What are the four other
	areas that LEED addresses?

Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
Stainless steel should probably be considered stain-less
rather than stain-proof since it is not unusual to see
some rusting on stainless steel. How could some of this
	rusting be prevented during fabrication?

ArchitectureWeek is a green publication. By publishing
this professional design and building magazine online-only,
we save about 48 tons of paper monthly, 50 large trees
every week, or 2500 trees a year, compared to reaching a similar
readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by 100% wind energy through our local utility:
