Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,

Green Wednesday, by the editors of ArchitectureWeek, brings you
weekly news on green design and building from around the world.

"I work in a Gold certified LEED (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design) 'green' building. We at the law school
are so excited and proud about this that we mention it in
our promotional brochures, announce it on our web site, give
tours, and generally position it as a selling point for the
school. We have non-toxic carpet, recycled materials,
windows that actually open, waterless urinals, automatic
lighting that turns off when you leave the room (most of the
time, anyways), and a 40% savings in energy used for heating
and cooling. We are comforted that we have done our part in
	saving the planet.

"But there¹s what we might call an inconvenient truth that
everyone seems to ignore: the five story parking garage that
is as large as the law school itself and filled with trucks,
SUVs and fancy sedans. If we were to take an honest look at
our collective ecological footprint‹a metaphor to depict the
amount of land and water a population hypothetically needs
to support itself and to absorb its wastes‹I am afraid we
would find that our green building isn¹t making as much of a
dent as we might think. ..."

This Week's Quiz -
The following projects were completed two years apart during
	the same decade; Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Washington DC;
AT&T Building, New York; Thorncrown Chapel; and the Los
Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. Who is the designer of
each, and which in decade were they built? If determining
the decade is too easy, try ordering them from oldest to
	newest.

Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
Protective coatings consist of pigments, binders, and
solvents. Paints are typically classified according to their
vehicles or binders. What are the two main types of paint?

ArchitectureWeek is a green publication. By publishing
this professional design and building magazine online-only,
we save about 48 tons of paper monthly, or about 50 large
trees-worth every week, compared to reaching a similar
readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by 100% wind energy through our local utility:
