Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,

ArchWeek Residential brings you housing news and analysis weekly from the editors of ArchitectureWeek.

Our publishing house, Artifice, Inc., is mostly focused on sharing a combination of mission-critical and culturally-vital information on architecture and the built environment, focused on professionals and the seriously-interested.

On the side, though, it happens that we also run "one of the Internet's leading free speech sites," dedicated since 1999 to free hosting of online petitions. Advocacy of causes, as it turns out, has a rather bigger footprint (even if commercially non-remunerative) than those taking a professional interest in the built environment.

PetitionOnline is a busy site, with millions of unique monthly visitors, top-5000 Quantcast and Compete ratings, and a four-digit Alexa rank that has hit as high as about 1000. At any given time, tens of thousands of petitions are active on the site, and upwards of 30,000 signatures are collected on a typical day.

The ongoing adventure that is PetitionOnline took a dramatic turn last Friday, when the site became inaccessible due to a form of Internet sabotage known as a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. In the ensuing four day struggle to get the site back online, involving help from site users across the country and touching such dimensions as Harvard Law and upper levels of the FBI in Washington, D.C., we of course learned far more about DDoS than we ever wanted to know.

So when housing newsletter time came around, and the all-hands-on-deck crisis was starting to settle down, I became curious about the intersection of online petitions, and residential design and building. Turns out there actually is one, however quixotic, as shown by these Google searches:

"Real Estate" at PetitionOnline (207 results):
http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en-us&q=site:petitiononline.com+%22real+estate%22&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

"Housing" at PetitionOnline (821 results):
