Residential Tuesday 2008.1021

Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,

Residential Tuesday brings you housing news and analysis weekly in
this free newsletter from the editors of ArchitectureWeek.

Does it seem a bit circular, when not only are several big home builders
bankrupt, as described by the analysts, but the big bank where the analyst
works has itself been 'rescued' out of existance?

September's plunge in U.S. home construction heralds not
only a near-term consolidation of the industry, but also
changes to business and building practices.

Single-family home starts in the Midwest, Northeast and West
all registered their lowest paces since records started
being kept in 1959, according to Commerce Department data.
"This is truly a historic time," said Morningstar analyst
	Eric Landry.

The downturn has already shrunk the industry. WCI
Communities Inc, led by investor Carl Icahn, Tousa Inc and
Levitt and Sons, builder of the first planned community,
	have all declared bankruptcy.

And more consolidation is needed, says Wachovia Capital
	Markets analyst Carl Reichardt.

Although the last two decades have seen Vancouver,
Canada, grab more attention for its forest of tall,
slender, glassy condominium towers, the city's smaller
neighbor, Victoria, is making some waves of its own.
The comparatively sleepy British Columbia capital, with
a population of just under 80,000, is home to one of
the most ambitious sustainable development projects
	ever undertaken in Canada.
