Residential Tuesday 2008.0226

Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,

Residential Tuesday brings you top housing news and analysis weekly
in this free email newsletter from the editors of ArchitectureWeek.

Home Depot and rival Lowe's Cos. have had tolls taken
on their financial results and share prices by
retrenching housing markets, which have slowed
building and demand for home-related materials.

Home Depot said in January it was cutting 10% of its
headquarters staff to devote a greater proportion of
resources to initiatives such as store remodeling and
customer-experience improvement after it lost market
share to Lowe's and other rivals.

http://www.architectureweek.com/2008/0220/building_1-1.html
Installing a full-scale intertie photovoltaic (PV)
system on a home is the king of solar investments. To
allow good time for decision-making, expect the entire
process to take 90 days or more. With a really serious
focus on conserving and altering energy consumption
patterns, expect the process to take six months.

Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
The permeability of materials to water vapor is measured
in perms. Materials with higher perm ratings are more
breathable than those with lower perm ratings. These
ratings vary by material and density. Materials used as
vapor barriers have low perm ratings. True or false: a
material with a perm rating greater than 1 is considered
	a "breathable" material?
