Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,

Residential Tuesday brings you top housing news and analysis weekly
in this free email newsletter from the editors of ArchitectureWeek.

NEW YORK (Associated Press) - If it's not being built,
they needn't come. The providers of everything from
lumber and concrete to wallboard and kitchen sinks
continue to struggle as residential construction contracts.

Halfway through the fourth-quarter reporting period, the
sector's major players are delivering sharp profit
declines and, in many cases, losses. None have offered
investors any hope for a recovery in 2008, and the stocks
continue to languish at or near 52-week lows.

The Dow Jones U.S. Building Materials index fell 18
percent over the past year. In January, the index fell
below 300 for the first time since mid-2006. ...

Heavy Things Seem to Float in Air - ArchitectureWeek, 2008.0206

Somewhere between the nostalgic musings of I. M. Pei and
the flickering of an independent-minded slideshow, noted
Marcel Breuer expert Barry Bergdoll expressed perhaps the
most remarkable aspect of Breuer's architecture: "by the
end of his career, even heavy things seem to float in
air." Bergdoll illustrated his point with a series of
striking images in which massive concrete structures
	balance as if on tiptoe.

Five years ago in ArchitectureWeek:
Santa Monica Electric, by Allison Milionis
	http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2003/0212/index.html
In light of rising energy costs and potentially
disastrous environmental policies, timing couldn't be
better for the opening of Colorado Court, one of the
first 100-percent energy-neutral housing developments in
the United States. Located on a busy, urban street corner
in Santa Monica, California, the award-winning
five-story, "green" building is designed not only to
reduce energy consumption but to return unused power back
	to the city's electrical grid.
