Residential Tuesday 2007.0807

Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,

Residential Tuesday brings you top housing news and analysis every week
in this free email newsletter from the editors of ArchitectureWeek.

Perhaps as a natural reaction to the recent subprime loan news, this
week saw a resurgence in coverage of affordable housing issues from
Australia and New Zealand to China, the United Kingdom, and
throughout North America.

And an essay by Anne Manne in The Age looks in part at housing
cost as it relates to other aspects of modern life:

The old "society of children" inhabiting the backyards,
creeks, parks and streets are more likely in a structured
after-school program. And for the little ones, the
multinational corporate chain, ABC Learning Centres, is as
ubiquitous as McDonald's, offering care from six weeks to
school age. I drive past one that has more parking than
playing space. High black metal bars surround the small pens
designated for outside play. They are covered in bright
	green plastic grass.

Driving with one of my daughters recently, I suddenly said,
"You know, I won't tell you how to balance your family with
work, but I will say this. If you think about buying a
house, consider buying a small one. A modest house with a
mortgage to match. That one decision will give you more
freedom on how to live your lives than any other."

For it had suddenly struck me that many of our contemporary
social problems are interlinked. They are not, as they are
usually presented, isolated issues. Every one of them has
the same root cause - they are merely a subset of the larger
	problem of overconsumption.

This Week's Quiz -
While "broach" can mean a piece of jewelry, it is also
used as a verb and a noun in stone masonry. What is a
	broach in masonry terms?

Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
In response to concerns about climate changes, there has
been a movement in several areas of the country to
require higher levels of environmental responsibility in
the design and construction of buildings. In some cases
this effort is led by architects, such as in Oregon,
where architects have helped initiate legislation (not
yet adopted) requiring state-funded buildings over a
certain size and cost to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design) Gold standards. Many of us
think of "green" architecture as being mostly concerned
with energy conservation. LEED addresses energy and four
other major areas of concern. What are the four other
	areas that LEED addresses?
