Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,

Residential Tuesday brings you top housing news and analysis
every week in this free email newsletter from the editors of
ArchitectureWeek.

On July 16, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook the northwestern coast of Japan, damaging and destroying thousands of homes:

Seismologists believe the frequency of the seismic waves in
Monday's earthquake, combined with the soft ground in areas
around Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture, contributed to the
	destruction of many wooden buildings.

The extent of the damage caused to buildings in an
earthquake depends on what materials they are constructed
from and the type of tremor that strikes. For example, a
high-rise building is susceptible to longer frequencies of
seismic wave, while an ordinary house is more likely to
shake as a result of shorter-frequency waves.

According to Tsukuba University Associate Prof. Yuki Sakai,
who studied the seismic waveform data released by the
National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster
Prevention, the seismic waves in Monday's earthquake had a
frequency cycle of one to two seconds, a range to which
	wooden houses are particularly vulnerable.
