Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,
Residential Tuesday brings you top housing news and analysis
every week in this free email newsletter from the editors of
ArchitectureWeek.
Typically, our goal is not to emphasize environmental issues in this
residential market newsletter. We have a specialist newsletter on
those topics, Green Wednesday.
But sometimes, there's no separation between what is a housing
design and building issue, and what is a green environmental issue.
In such instances, it would be more false to the residential market
for us to avoid the green note. This week seems like one of those
times:
Environment Minister John Thwaites announced changes
yesterday after "The Age" revealed that new homes built
under the five-star system were 6 per cent less efficient
than those built before its introduction three years ago.
He conceded increased house sizes... had led to an increase
in new-home emissions.

This Week's Quiz -
The Danziger Studio (1965) in Hollywood, California is a
modern and simple artist's studio and residence
consisting of linked cubes. This is an early work by a
designer who has since become famous for decidedly
un-cubic architecture. Who is this architect?

Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
In a wide concert hall with high ceilings, the center of
the orchestra section often has good sight lines but poor
acoustics. In fact, if you don’t mind using binoculars,
you may get better sound in the back balcony. Why is this
so and how can it be fixed?
