Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,
Residential Tuesday brings you top housing news and analysis
every week in this free email newsletter from the editors of
ArchitectureWeek.
You've heard the news on New Century (or see below). So let's look
in a different direction this week...
How much floor area does a person really need? This is a
tricky question. Your own need for space depends on many
variables and every individual has their own notion of
what amount of space is enough. This notion is influenced
by many factors. To a large extent it is cultural and is
affected by the conditions you grew up in. The population
density of places such as Tokyo and Hong Kong means that
residents of these cities, for example, have lower
expectations of living space than Australians might.

location. Concrete winch towers of the Schwager coal mine
dominate the neighborhood's horizon and influence details
of the house design.

This Week's Quiz -
We are all familiar with the term "spaciousness" as
describing a spatial quality. In designing a performance
space for classical music, this word also describes an
acoustic quality. Please define "spaciousness" as an
acoustic quality and explain how it relates to
spaciousness in the spatial sense.

Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
When designing an unheated facility the anticipated
ambient temperature can influence your choice of lamp
types. What is the minimum start-up temperature for a
standard compact fluorescent?

ArchitectureWeek is a green publication. By publishing
this professional design and building magazine online-only,
we save about 48 tons of paper monthly, or about 50 large
trees-worth every week, compared to reaching a similar
readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by 100% wind energy through our local utility.
