Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,

Residential Tuesday brings you top housing news and analysis
every week in this free email newsletter from the editors of
ArchitectureWeek.

On observing Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke minimize
the likely economic impact of today's deepening housing
market problems, one has to wonder what, if anything, might
the Federal Reserve have learnt from the bursting of the
dot-com bubble in 2001. At that time, too, the Fed
downplayed the economic consequences of a collapsing asset
market. And it did so only to find itself, a few months
later, in the awkward position of having to aggressively cut
interest rates to prevent the dot-com crash from
	precipitating a deep economic recession.

Duffy and Johnson warned, however, that California's
new-home market may soon feel the effects of the meltdown in
the sub-prime mortgage market, which surfaced in the last 30
to 60 days. Many first-time new-home buyers, especially
those with no down payment and with weak credit histories,
have relied on high-cost sub-prime mortgages to become
	homeowners.

But with banks recently toughening their rules for such
borrowers, many analysts see the demand for new homes
weakening in the near term, prolonging the nation's housing
	slump.

ArchitectureWeek is a green publication. By publishing
this professional design and building magazine online-only,
we save about 48 tons of paper monthly, or about 50 large
trees-worth every week, compared to reaching a similar
readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by 100% wind energy through our local utility.
