BAR HOUSE IN ASPEN
by Peter L. Gluck
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/today.html
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/1216/design_1-1.html
The simple and strong geometric shape of the Bar House
near Aspen, Colorado - which is a bar set boldly
across, rather than nestling along, the valley floor -
stands up to the rugged and majestic mountains
that surround it. Despite its strength, this house by
Peter Gluck and Partners is partly submerged in the
ground, as if to lock it into the landscape. The views
up and down the valley dominate the interior spaces, but
they are tempered in different ways by the varied size
and placement of the windows and the shape of the rooms.
The winter weather is severe, and the sun reaches the
bottom of the narrow valley only from the south. The
bedrooms and the family room are located in a
single-loaded corridor on the south side of the second
floor. The linear program gives each room southern
exposure and provides spectacular views of the valley.
An exterior stair is elongated on the northern side,
leading to an open-air roof deck, allowing light into
the second floor and providing the bedrooms with
cross-ventilation. The living room on the ground floor
has scenic views on three sides. A garage and guest
apartment are located on the other side of the driveway,
and an overhang of the house provides protection in
inclement weather.

Christman Building
by Nancy Novitski
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/1216/environment_1-1.html
For the new Christman Company headquarters in downtown
Lansing, Michigan, SmithGroup set out to design modern,
high-end offices within a historic building. What
resulted, somewhat surprisingly, was a sustainable
exemplar.
Christman, a Lansing-based construction company, had
purchased a 1928 building listed on the National
Register of Historic Places, and set a modest goal for
sustainable renovation: basic certification under LEED
for Core & Shell.

Maya Lin - Unchopping a Tree
by Kevin Matthews
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/1216/environment_2-1.html
As we wait and listen around the world to hear what new
increment of our collective fate will emerge from the final days
of the Copenhagen climate conference, this new video piece by
Maya Lin, itself an increment of her "What is Missing?"
environmental memorial project, speaks deeply on the disaster of
ongoing deforestation.

Postcard from Portland
by David Owen
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/1216/culture_1-1.html
If you visited Portland, Oregon's Saturday Market prior
to 2009, then you might remember a collection of vendor
stalls arranged under the concrete approach ramp of the
Burnside Bridge, spilling out to the south, wrapping
around a ponderous and slightly run-down brick building,
and continuing toward the historic Skidmore Fountain.
And if you visit that site today, you'll notice things
have changed.

This Week's Quiz -
In 1937, the first Herbert Jacobs House was completed
in Madison, Wisconsin. This was the first "Usonian"
house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
The Usonian houses were designed to incorporate
technical innovations, such as radiant floors. More
importantly, they were intended to be low-cost,
affordable housing. This was accomplished by eliminating
unnecessary elements. Interior finishes were left out,
where possible, as were major elements, such as garages
and basements. In addition, the building's layout was
based on material modules with the intention of
minimizing construction waste.
In 1909, Wright's compact Robie House had cost $35,000 to
build. How much did his first Usonian house cost to build:
$5,500, $35,000, or $50,000?

** ArchitectureWeek is a green and low-carbon-footprint
publication. By publishing this professional design and building
magazine online-only, we save about 48 tons of paper monthly,
50 large trees every week, or 2500 trees (a dozen or more acres
of mature conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a
similar readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by a green mix of 98% wind energy and 2% solar power
through our local electric utilities.
