AIA EDUCATION AWARDS
by ArchitectureWeek

On a former farm outside Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the
Indian Community School aims to connect Native American
students with their cultural heritage through both
curriculum and setting. Antoine Predock Architect PC
designed a building to both foster and exemplify that
cultural and environmental awareness.
The private school is one of thirteen schools to receive
a 2009 Educational Facility Design Award from the
American Institute of Architects. Through the awards
program, the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education
(CAE) seeks to identify trends, honor excellence in
planning and design, and disseminate knowledge about
best practices. Many of this year's winning projects
demonstrate sustainable design.
Three honorees have previously been covered in
ArchitectureWeek. Both the Yale University Sculpture
Building and Gallery by Kieran Timberlake, and the
Pocono Environmental Education Center at Delaware Water
Gap National Recreation Area, by Bohlin Cywinski
Jackson, were named Top Ten Green Projects for 2008 by
the AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE). The Arizona
State University Polytechnic Academic Complex in Mesa,
by Lake Flato Architects with RSP Architects, has also
been featured in depth.
Native Wisconsin School
The Indian Community School serves 280 elementary and
middle school students from 11 different tribes. The
facility is located in suburban Franklin, Wisconsin, on
a 200-acre (80-hectare) site selected for its tangible
relationship to tribal homelands in northern Wisconsin.
To avoid removing existing oak and shagbark hawthorn
trees, the architects carefully arranged the building
form along a high ridge, focusing views from the
building out onto the remnant hardwood forest, prairie,
wetlands, and reconstructed wetland.

McGill University Cybertheque
by Giancarlo La Giorgia
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0923/building_1-1.html
For decades, the lower level of the Redpath Library
Building at McGill University languished as a drab,
dimly lit, compartmentalized box within which books and
students were stowed.
That changed when the Montreal school revamped some of
that standard institutional library space into the
Cybertheque - an open, stylish, technology-centered
learning space that has become one of the university's
most popular study areas.

Assessment on High-Performance Buildings
This report was prepared in response to Section 914 of the
Energy Policy Act of 2005, which addresses the need for not just
"green" but high-performance buildings that combine the
objectives of reducing resource and energy consumption with
improving the environmental impact and functionality of
buildings and the comfort and productivity of their occupants.

This Week's Quiz -
"Just as one learns how to use light in building and to
think of it as an integral part early on in the process,
so one should conceive color." - Joseph Esherick
Hue, value, and chroma are sometimes described as the
three dimensions of color. Please define these three
terms.

Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
The following quote was inscribed in the floor of the
Chicago Tribune Tower:
"Therefore when we build let us think that we build
forever. Let it not be for present delight nor for
present use alone. Let it be such Work as our
descendants will thank us for and let us think as we lay
Stone on Stone that a time is to come when those stones
will be held sacred because our hands have touched them
and that men will say as they look upon the labor and
the wrought substance of them, 'See this our fathers did
for us.'"
To whom is this quote attributed: Henry Richardson,
William Morris, or John Ruskin?

** ArchitectureWeek is a green and low-carbon-footprint
publication. By publishing this professional design and building
magazine online-only, we save about 48 tons of paper monthly,
50 large trees every week, or 2500 trees (a dozen or more acres
of mature conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a
similar readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by a green mix of 98% wind energy and 2% solar power
through our local electric utilities.
