TWO HOUSES IN EAST AUSTRALIA
    by Debra Pickrel
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/today.html
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0902/building_1-1.html

Two houses in east Australia exhibit powerful simplicity
in form, space, and circulation, while each effectively
addresses the specifics of its contrasting site, seaside
	or subdivision.

Designed by two different Brisbane firms, each lead by
young principals, both of these houses show environmentally
conscious responses to the subtropical climate of the
southeastern Queensland area, with warm, humid summers
	and mild winters.

	Black Box on the Beach
In Kingscliff, New South Wales, just south of the
Queensland border, the She Oak House designed by Base
Architecture is unquestionably purpose-built. Located in
a beachfront neighborhood near the Gold Coast, one of
the world's leading surfing destinations, the
	350-square-meter (3,800-square-foot) dwelling was
commissioned by a lawyer passionate about the sport who
also wanted a place for entertaining.

Base Architecture chose a "raw" exterior building skin
of galvanized steel and stained rough-sawn plywood. "We
aimed for a refined design with an easy, open feeling
that could also stand up to the harsh elements of the
shoreline, including salt spray, blowing sand, and
blazing sun," explains architect Shawn Godwin.

Parish Church in Lecce
    by Conrad Thake
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0902/design_1-1.html

The city of Lecce, located in the southern heel of the
Italian peninsula, is associated with highly ornate
baroque palaces and churches, their facades overlaid
with elaborate decorative carvings in the local
	limestone.

This Week's Quiz -
The International Building Code requires you to provide
one foot-candle of light at the ground surface along the
path of egress from the building you are designing to
the public way. In order to get a sense of how much
light this is, you might compare it to moonlight. About
how much light does a full moon provide on a clear
	night: one-half foot-candle, one foot-candle, or two
	foot-candles?

	** ArchitectureWeek is a green and low-carbon-footprint
publication. By publishing this professional design and building
magazine online-only, we save about 48 tons of paper monthly,
50 large trees every week, or 2500 trees (a dozen or more acres
of mature conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a
similar readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by a green mix of 98% wind energy and 2% solar power
	through our local electric utilities.

Reduce your carbon footprint... Switch those old paper-based
monthly subscriptions - and read ArchitectureWeek online!
