Dear ArchitectureWeek Readers,

ArchitectureWeek No. 441 is now available on the Web, with these
new design and building features, and more...

WHO IS PETER ZUMTHOR?
    by Michael J. Crosbie
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/today.html
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0826/culture_1-1.html

In April, about two weeks before his 66th birthday,
Swiss architect Peter Zumthor was named the 2009
laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. Zumthor is
not a household name, as many other Pritzker winners
have been - architects such as Gehry, Meier, and
Pei. Even many architects havn't heard of him.

But Zumthor has been described as an "architect's
architect." His works are not numerous, given a practice
of over 30 years, but each one is carefully crafted,
	materially exquisite, and atmospherically evocative.

Known as the "Nobel Prize of Architecture," the Pritzker
Prize has gained a reputation of anointing architects
who are already stars with high public profiles. But the
Pritzker jury has on occasion selected architects who
are less known outside architectural circles -
practitioners such as Paulo Mendes da Rocha of Brazil
	and Jean Nouvel of France.

One-Way and Two-Way Clay-Tile and Unit-Masonry Joist Systems
    by D. Matthew Stuart
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0826/building_1-1.html

Focusing on structural engineering issues involved in
the repair, restoration, or adaptive reuse of older
buildings for which drawings no longer exist, this
article is the third in a series on antiquated
structural systems that can be adapted or reanalyzed for
	safe reuse. - Editor

	One-way and two-way clay-tile and unit-masonry joist
systems - successors to one type of clay-tile arched
floor system, and predecessors to the modern waffle slab -
were used in the United States starting early in the 20th century.

	** ArchitectureWeek is a green and low-carbon-footprint
publication. By publishing this professional design and building
magazine online-only, we save about 48 tons of paper monthly,
50 large trees every week, or 2500 trees (a dozen or more acres
of mature conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a
similar readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by a green mix of 98% wind energy and 2% solar power
	through our local electric utilities.

Reduce your carbon footprint... Switch those old paper-based
monthly subscriptions - and read ArchitectureWeek online!
