AIA SMALL PROJECT AWARDS 2009
    by Brian Libby
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/today.html
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0812/news_1-1.html

When Nanette and Jerry Stump bought a wooded property in
Evansville, Indiana, to build an accessible retirement
home, they turned to a young architect fresh out of
	school: their son.

Parental faith in a designer without a completed
project to his name did not go unrewarded. The Stumps
have enjoyed living in their Luminous Bodies Residence
for the last two years, and the design was recently
honored by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in
	its 2009 Small Project Awards.

The house was recognized in the category of accessible
residential design, this year's wild-card category. The
"objects" category includes smaller elements, such as
furniture and fixtures, with construction budgets of up
to a $50,000, while for general structures, the budgets
may reach a maximum of $500,000.

	Luminous and Universal
The commission given to Reggie Stump was unusual: to
design a living space for his divorced parents, who
wanted to live together upon retirement, one of whom has
cerebral palsy. The younger Stump left his job with
well-known New Mexico architect Antoine Predock to
	design the home.

FSC Versus SFI
    by Christine MacDonald
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0812/environment_1-1.html

When the Forest Stewardship Council rolled out the
world's first "green" wood certification label in 1993,
the organization quickly rallied big-box retailers like
Home Depot to the cause. The largest do-it-yourself home
improvement chain in the United States became a founding
member of the FSC and publicly announced that it would
soon ensure all of its products came from certified
	sources.

	** ArchitectureWeek is a green and low-carbon-footprint
publication. By publishing this professional design and building
magazine online-only, we save about 48 tons of paper monthly,
50 large trees every week, or 2500 trees (a dozen or more acres
of mature conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a
similar readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by a green mix of 98% wind energy and 2% solar power
	through our local electric utilities.

Reduce your carbon footprint... Switch those old paper-based
monthly subscriptions - and read ArchitectureWeek online!
