new design and building features, and more.
MAGIC BLUE BOX
by Terri Peters

A giant blue cuboid has sprung up in Copenhagen,
Denmark. This striking scaffolding box wrapped in
translucent blue fabric is the new Copenhagen Concert
Hall.
During the day, the building's blue skin largely
conceals the faceted forms within, with peeled-back
areas on the sides of the steel-framed box showing that
the outside wrapping is more than just an imposing blue
billboard. From the right angle, visitors can see vague
outlines of the building forms beneath the translucent
textile.
Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning French architect Jean
Nouvel, with acoustic design by noted Japanese
consultants Nagata Acoustics, the building is the new
permanent home for the Danish National Symphony
Orchestra.
Nouvel's ambitious design balances a complex
architectural program comprising four distinct concert
spaces, at once ensuring high-quality acoustic
performance suitable for multiple music genres and
creating a landmark in Orestad, a new district of
Copenhagen under active development.

Making Buildings Good
by Marian Keeler and Bill Burke
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0722/environment_1-1.html
The days of making the business case for sustainable
design, or even explaining what LEED means and why it is
important, have passed. Today's green building
challenges have moved to more complicated areas of
policy - permitting and politics - and the
motivating sense of competition to be "the greenest."

** ArchitectureWeek is a green and low-carbon-footprint
publication. By publishing this professional design and building
magazine online-only, we save about 48 tons of paper monthly,
50 large trees every week, or 2500 trees (a dozen or more acres
of mature conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a
similar readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by a green mix of 98% wind energy and 2% solar power
through our local electric utilities.
