AMERICAN LANDSCAPE AWARDS 2009
    by ArchitectureWeek

Buffalo Bayou flows through downtown Houston, Texas,
under a tangle of freeways and bridges on its way to
Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Landscape
architects SWA Group reenvisioned a neglected 1.2-mile
(1.9-kilometer) length of bayou front, transforming it
	into pedestrian-friendly parkland with improved
	floodwater conveyance.

Their thoughtful approach to the Buffalo Bayou Promenade
earned the top general design award from the American
Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) in its 2009
Professional Awards. The award recipients included a
wide variety of public parks, private gardens, master
plans, and communications projects from the United
	States and around the world.

	Houston Bayou Promenade
SWA Group faced many challenges in creating a more
usable public green link between Houston's downtown and
the pastoral park to the west. Located well below grade,
and poorly connected to the surrounding streets at the
outset of the project, the 23-acre (nine-hectare) site
weaves through a series of freeway structures, which
block sunlight and shed sheets of water during
rainstorms. Deposition of silt and trash is constant and
erosion severe along this waterway that drains much of
	Houston.

Dymaxion Redux
    by Federico Neder
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0617/culture_1-1.html

Visiting Fuller's house today requires a $14 ticket. In
a landscape packed with planes, trains, and vehicles of
all kinds, the sparkling body of the Dymaxion House
	makes a striking appearance.

"I love your articles! Out of all the design magazines and emails
I receive every week, yours is the one I always read. I feel like
I have traveled somewhere and have really seen something. It is
so nice to have a resource that discusses a whole building - not
just the inside, or outside, but how one actually experiences it. "

	** ArchitectureWeek is a green and low-carbon-footprint
publication. By publishing this professional design and building
magazine online-only, we save about 48 tons of paper monthly,
50 large trees every week, or 2500 trees (a dozen or more acres
of mature conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a
similar readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by a green mix of 98% wind energy and 2% solar power
	through our local electric utilities.

Reduce your carbon footprint... Switch those old paper-based
monthly subscriptions - and read ArchitectureWeek online!
