AIA HOUSING AWARDS 2009
    by Brian Libby
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/today.html
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0610/news_1-1.html

Toward the street, the concrete-block home near Bellevue,
Idaho, presents minimally incised walls. From inside,
the boxy masonry of Outpost opens up to surprisingly
expansive views of the rural Idaho landscape.

While the house, designed by Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen
Architects, is built of simple, inexpensive, durable
materials - which obviated the need for environmentally
unfriendly coatings, paints, and sealants - its courtyard
layout and multistory design make the building an elegant
place for the artists who live and work there.

Outpost is one of 17 projects honored in the 2009 AIA
Housing Awards. Through the awards program, now in its
ninth year, the American Institute of Architects
recognizes excellent residential design and seeks to
promote the importance of good housing as a necessity of
life, a sanctuary for the human spirit, and a valuable
	national resource.

Houses by the Firm of the Year
Outpost exemplifies the sensitive approach of Olson
Sundberg Kundig Allen, which received the AIA
Architecture Firm Award for 2009. Principal Tom Kundig
led design on both Outpost and the Montecito Residence
	in Montecito, California.

Located in fire-prone Toro Canyon, the Montecito
Residence is long and slender in form with a distinctive
upward-pointing roof. Extensive concrete provides thermal
mass, helping keep the home warm in winter and cool in
summer, while the long central hallway helps channel
off-shore breezes from the nearby Pacific.

Pelli's Platinum Visionaire
    by Michael Cockram
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0610/environment_1-1.html

At first glance, the glossy new 35-story condominium
tower slicing into the lower Manhattan skyline doesn't
stand out as a beacon of sustainable design. Its sleek
form - an extruded curving wedge accented with red
terra cotta bands - looks more Ferrari than Prius.
And the structure's granite base and travertine lobby
walls are elements not usually associated with green
	building.

Ralph Rapson - architect, artist, furniture designer, and teacher -
played a leading role in the development and practice of modern
architecture, nationally and internationally. The Afton Press book
'Ralph Rapson: Sixty Years of Modern Design' by Rip Rapson, Jane King
Hession, and Bruce N. Wright documents the architect's sweeping career
 and incisive associations:

	** ArchitectureWeek is a green and low-carbon-footprint
publication. By publishing this professional design and building
magazine online-only, we save about 48 tons of paper monthly,
50 large trees every week, or 2500 trees (a dozen or more acres
of mature conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a
similar readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by a green mix of 98% wind energy and 2% solar power
	through our local electric utilities.

Reduce your carbon footprint... Switch those old paper-based
monthly subscriptions - and read ArchitectureWeek online!
