AIA/COTE TOP TEN GREEN PROJECTS FOR 2009
by Brian Libby
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/today.html
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0429/news_1-1.html
In September 2005, as construction was starting at the
Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center in
Orange, Texas, the property was severely damaged by
Hurricane Rita. The building team led by Lake/Flato
Architects salvaged storm-felled trees and
incorporated the wood into the project.
Adaptive thinking by the building team is common to the
American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on the
Environment (COTE) Top Ten Green Projects for 2009. This
year's ten selections include a private school and an
affordable housing development, a town hall, and the
headquarters for a regional energy utility.
Two of these ten projects, both LEED Platinum-certified,
were recently covered in depth in ArchitectureWeek -
the Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation synagogue
in Evanston, Illinois, designed by Ross Barney Architects,
was a front page story in April, and Synergy, the first
phase of the Dockside Green mixed-use development in
Victoria, Canada, designed by Busby Perkins + Will,
was featured in October 2008.
Protecting Paradise
The Shangri La complex serves as an interpretive center
for the site's native ecosystems - including
cypress and tupelo swamp, wooded uplands, and prairie
lowlands - and also as a study and research
facility. It received the still-rare LEED Platinum
certification for new construction (LEED-NC).

Autodesk Ecotect Analysis 2010
by Kenneth Wong
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0429/tools_1-1.html
If your client adds a series of penthouses to his
pending skyscraper, will it cast a shadow on nearby city
properties? How much can you reduce solar gain by adding
some shading devices between the floors?
If you cover the roof areas with photovoltaic panels,
how much electricity can you generate? And if your
client changes the project from a residential building
to an office building, how will it affect the annual
water usage?

This Week's Quiz -
As recently at the 1970s, some scientists were saying an
ice age was imminent. This seems to contradict the
concern about global warming. Is an ice age coming, and,
if so, will it counteract global warming?
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0429/quiz.html
Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
There have been advances in many traditional building
systems in response to environmental and energy
conservation concerns. "Electrochromic," "suspended
particle," and "liquid crystal" are terms that relate to
technological developments for which traditional
building component?

** ArchitectureWeek is a green and low-carbon-footprint
publication. By publishing this professional design and building
magazine online-only, we save about 48 tons of paper monthly,
50 large trees every week, or 2500 trees (a dozen or more acres
of mature conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a
similar readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by a green mix of 98% wind energy and 2% solar power
through our local electric utilities.
